Annie Ward

BA(Hons) Fine Art, SWAc

Primarily a painter, I also construct pieces using textiles, paper and found objects.  Much of what I do has evolved out of my interest in both historic and genealogical research. This means that I may revisit a series of works over a number of years as research progresses. Layering, distortion and erasure have all come to play a key part in my practice, referencing the often fugitive nature of both memory and historic narrative.

Selected Works

The Mapping of Memory

Half remembered childhood recollections of the English landscape form the basis for this series of paintings and drawings. Entwining topographical detail with elements of abstraction, schematic maps of those mutable spaces between land and water or eroding field margins, question the fragility of personal memory. Fine scribbled lines act as inscriptions on the surface, interrogating the existence of half hidden borders and boundaries.

An Uncertain Existence

These works explore notions of domesticity and women’s concerns over work-life balance. Inhabiting the space between abstraction and figuration, sketchy, flattened shapes reminiscent of domestic ware, intermingle with other less defined abstract shapes. Sometimes there appears to be a comfortable settled arrangement. At other times the clutter may appear juggled or simply thrown into space.

The Palimpsests

These works are a tribute to the lives of generations of my female ancestors who worked in The Potteries and the Lancashire textile mills. Each piece evolves in a process of erasing, scraping back and overpainting. Often incorporating historic texts, they are an exploration of impermanence, of presence and absence.

Conversation Pieces

This series of work investigates the historic narratives revolving around the lives of working women during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Delicate materials such as handmade paper and textiles are combined with tougher materials such as metal or wood reflecting the dual nature of these women. Many pieces incorporate historic texts. The processes involved include layering, manipulation, scrubbing, wrapping and binding in repetitive actions symbolic of ‘women’s labour’ and ritualised behaviour.
